Prong Tips for Spearfishing

The prong tip for spearfishing is the terminal component of the speargun shaft, the part that comes into contact with the fish at the moment of the shot. Despite its compact size, it has a direct impact on capture effectiveness: the geometry of the tips, the number of tips, the construction material, and the retention system determine penetration, holding power on the fish, and ease of retrieval. Choosing the correct prong tip based on the fishing technique, target species, and visibility conditions is an important technical decision.

In this category you will find prong tips designed to screw directly onto the speargun shaft — both band-powered and pneumatic — in 3-, 4-, and 5-tip configurations, as well as French-style trident tips for targeting specific species such as sea bass. Also available are hand prong tips with integrated pole, a solution separate from the speargun and intended for different use cases.

Available types of prong tips

Lightweight prong tips (3 and 4 tips)

The lightweight 3- and 4-tip prong tips are built with tempered steel tips and a Nylon base. The lightweight structure reduces hydrodynamic drag on the shaft, with less impact on shot trajectory at medium range. They are suitable for medium-sized fish and for situations where penetration speed is prioritized over holding power.

4- and 5-tip prong tips with larger cross-section

Models such as the Salvimar Speed 4 Mustad and the JET Mustad and JET Inox 5-tip series offer tips with a more robust cross-section. Versions with Mustad tips — galvanized tempered steel — and Stainless Steel versions differ in corrosion resistance: stainless tips, not being subject to oxidation in the marine environment, maintain their structural integrity even with frequent saltwater use. The Salvimar Martin 5 Tips Prong Tip has a Nylon PA6 base and 5 galvanized tempered steel Ø5mm tips, with a good balance between capture surface and weight.

French-style trident tips (MATC Imersion)

The Imersion MATC French Trident Tip represents a distinct technical category. It is a trident tip with 3 tips measuring 6.0mm in diameter, specifically designed for hunting sea bass and similar species, both in open water and Hole Spearfishing. The configuration uses short tips to make it easier for the barbs to open even in tight spaces. The central tip is oriented at 90° to the two side tips: this geometry increases holding probability regardless of the direction in which the fish tries to escape. The mobile stainless steel wire barbs ensure retention on the fish and can be flipped over to extract the fish without damaging it. The central tip is threaded and interchangeable, allowing replacement of the individual component, available separately as a spare part. The MATC Spigola model features even shorter tips than the standard version, optimized for shots in confined spaces. Availability in a titanium version further reduces head weight compared to the stainless steel version, with less impact on speargun balance.

Hand prong tips

The hand prong tips are a completely different solution: they do not screw onto a speargun, but are wielded directly by hand. They consist of a shaft made from a fiber tube covered with a protective plastic sheath, with handle and prong tip. They are used for taking close-range prey - octopus, crustaceans, fish hidden in crevices - where human dexterity replaces speargun propulsion.

The Prong Tip Covers, available in several size variants, protect the tips during transport and storage, reducing the risk of accidental injury and mechanical deterioration of the tips.

How to choose a prong tip for spearfishing

The choice should start from three main parameters: compatibility with the speargun shaft, the fishing technique used, and the target species.

  • Shaft compatibility: the prong tips in this category are compatible with 6.5 to 8.0 mm shafts. The most common thread is M7x1. Before purchasing, check the diameter and thread of your speargun shaft to ensure a correct and secure fit.
  • Open-water spearfishing: for open-water spearfishing on medium-sized fish, standard-configuration prong tips offer a wide capture surface, but the shot in open water will still be limited and should therefore be taken at close range. French-style trident tip versions offer greater possibilities and performance, especially those in titanium, allowing the capture of fish of a certain size as well.
  • Hole Spearfishing: where spaces are tight and shots are taken at extremely short range, 3-, 4-, and 5-tip prong tips should be chosen based on the size of the crevices and the type of prey that usually inhabit these holes.
  • Large species: for larger fish, tips with a larger cross-section (Ø6mm on MATC trident tips) offer greater mechanical resistance during penetration than lightweight Ø3.5–5mm tips.
  • Weight at the muzzle: each prong tip adds mass to the end of the shaft. Titanium models (Imersion MATC) weigh less than Stainless Steel models of the same size, affecting the balance and shot trajectory less. This aspect is especially relevant on shorter spearguns or for long-range shots.

Materials and technical features

The materials used in the prong tips in this category differ in corrosion resistance, weight, and mechanical strength.

Tempered or galvanized steel: used in the tips of the Salvimar series (Martin, Speed Mustad, JET Mustad, and Nettuno). Galvanizing provides surface protection against corrosion, with oxidation resistance sufficient for marine use when accompanied by freshwater rinsing after each use. The tempering process increases steel hardness, reducing deformation after impacts.

Stainless Steel: used in the Speed Inox Black, JET Inox, and steel-version MATC Imersion trident tips. Stainless steel does not require surface treatments to resist corrosion in the marine environment, maintaining its mechanical properties even with prolonged exposure to saltwater. The stainless steel wire barbs in MATC trident tips take advantage of this feature to ensure long-term reliability without loss of elasticity.

Titanium: available in the premium variant of the MATC Imersion trident tip. Titanium has a lower density than steel (about 45% less for the same volume) while maintaining high mechanical strength, resulting in a lighter head. In the marine environment, titanium is not subject to oxidation or galvanic corrosion through contact with other equipment metals.

Nylon PA6: used as the base body in Salvimar prong tips (Martin, Speed, JET, 3 and 4 Lightweight Tips). Nylon PA6 provides structural lightness and impact resistance without weakening the mechanical connection between tip and shaft.

Available brands

Salvimar is an Italian company that produces spearfishing equipment. In this category it offers the full range of general-use prong tips — from affordable lightweight tips to Speed and JET models in stainless steel versions — as well as the Nettuno hand prong tip and tip covers. The range covers the most common needs of spearfishers with solidly built solutions compatible with nearly all shafts for band-powered and pneumatic spearguns on the market.

Imersion is a French brand specialized in technical spearfishing equipment. The trident tips in the MATC series are the brand’s flagship offering in this category: made from Stainless Steel or Titanium, with patented barbs and an interchangeable central tip, they are designed for targeting specific species and precise operating conditions. Availability in multiple size variants (with 3 sizes in the standard MATC version) allows the trident tip to be adapted to different shaft and fishing configurations.

Conclusion

The prong tips for spearfishing available on Deep Blue cover the main technical needs of spearfishers: from affordable lightweight galvanized steel tips with Nylon base for general spearfishing, to Imersion MATC French-style trident tips in Stainless Steel and Titanium for hunting specific fish in particular environments. Differentiation by number of tips, material, and barb geometry makes it possible to select the prong tip according to the target species, the technique used, and the specific characteristics of the speargun in use.

Compatibility with 6.5 to 8.0mm shafts and M7x1 threading ensures broad coverage of the most common speargun models. The availability of accessories such as tip covers and the replacement central tip for MATC trident tips completes the offering with useful solutions both for safety during transport and for equipment maintenance.
