Neoprene Accessories for Spearfishing

In a spearfisher’s kit, alongside the wetsuit and fins, there are a number of neoprene accessories that perform specific and often underestimated technical functions. Back Weights weight systems, undersuits, bermuda shorts, and pee valves are supplementary components of spearfishing equipment, each with a specific role related to thermal management, weight distribution, or body protection during spearfishing.

Unlike gloves or socks, which fall into dedicated categories, the neoprene accessories collected in this section cover complementary needs: increasing the thermal insulation of the main wetsuit, carrying weight in a balanced way on the body, or protecting the areas most exposed to cold. These items make a real contribution to comfort and time in the water, especially during long sessions or in colder seasons.

Product Types

Neoprene Undersuits

The undersuit is a thin neoprene vest worn under the main wetsuit to increase thermal insulation. The models in this category feature moderate thicknesses from 2 to 3 mm, with lined/open-cell or smooth-skin/lined neoprene construction.

Some models are also available with an integrated hood, increasing thermal coverage for the head.

Weight-Carrying Back Weights

The Back Weight is a neoprene accessory worn on the back, with integrated pockets or supports for positioning lead weights. Unlike a traditional weight belt, the Back Weight distributes weight over a larger area of the body, reducing the amount of lead needed on the belt during shallow-water spearfishing sessions.

This category includes models in neutral colors and camouflage models, useful in situations where the spearfisher’s visibility to fish may affect the outcome of the session. Some models integrate neoprene fringes that imitate Posidonia seagrass, helping conceal the spearfisher.

Neoprene Bermuda Shorts

Neoprene bermuda shorts are mid-thigh shorts usually worn over the wetsuit, providing additional thermal protection for the lower back, hips, and thighs. One of their key functions is to seal the wetsuit, helping prevent water from entering between the jacket and pants. When needed, they can also serve as a pocket for carrying small items. Some versions are available in camouflage, made with neoprene printed with a camouflage pattern.

Pee Valves (Drain Valves)

A pee valve is a neoprene valve that can be applied to the wetsuit, allowing urine to drain without having to partially open the wetsuit to urinate, which would let in cold water and reduce thermal insulation. This category includes models in black and camouflage versions.

How to Choose Neoprene Accessories for Spearfishing

The choice of neoprene accessories mainly depends on three factors: the water temperature where you fish, the type of wetsuit you already use, and the spearfishing technique practiced.

  • Water temperature: in water temperatures that are not suitable for the wetsuit thickness, adding an undersuit and bermuda shorts helps limit heat loss, allowing longer sessions. In summer, when the water is warm, these accessories may not be necessary.
  • Type of wetsuit already in use: in water temperatures that are not too cold, a 3 mm wetsuit paired with a 2 mm undersuit provides torso insulation equivalent to a 5 mm wetsuit, with the advantage of better mobility compared to a single, thicker suit. Likewise, in winter, the insulation of a 5 mm wetsuit can be increased by adding an undersuit, bringing the neoprene thickness on the torso to 7 mm without needing to purchase a full winter suit.
  • Back Weight: spearfishers who carry out long shallow-water ambush sessions will benefit from using a Back Weight, which distributes ballast by placing part of it over one of the areas of the body most prone to buoyancy (the lungs), significantly improving the spearfisher’s trim during this technique.
  • Drainage needs: pee valves are especially useful with two-piece wetsuits (jacket + pants), where urinating inside the wetsuit is not recommended, and at the same time partially opening the wetsuit to urinate is also not recommended because it allows cold water to enter.

Available Brands

This category includes products from the following brands:

  • Mares: offers the 2 mm neoprene undersuit with lined exterior and open-cell interior construction, and weight-carrying Back Weights in the Illusion and Black versions. Mares is a benchmark brand in underwater equipment, with a long history in the spearfishing segment.
  • C4: featured with Ultrastretch undersuits (with and without integrated hood), the winter cap, and the Marco Bardi fringed Back Weight. C4 is an Italian brand specializing in spearfishing and freediving equipment, known for its use of highly elastic neoprene.
  • Salvimar: offers the Krypsis Back Weight in camouflage version, the Drop Back Weight, the Drop bermuda shorts, and the P.Channel Black and Krypsis Camo pee valves. Salvimar is an Italian brand focused on spearfishing equipment, with a camouflage line recognizable for its Krypsis camo pattern.
  • Omer: offers the UP-H1 neoprene hood, designed to fit different types of wetsuits. Omer is an Italian manufacturer with decades of experience in the spearfishing sector.
  • Rob Allen: featured with the chest loading pad, a specific neoprene accessory designed to protect the chest area when loading band-powered spearguns.
  • Best Divers: offers the Spider Back Weight in camouflage version, available in three sizes.

Conclusion

Neoprene accessories for spearfishing are a technical component often overlooked when assembling equipment, but they are highly relevant for comfort, thermal management, and ballast distribution during spearfishing sessions. Undersuits, Back Weights, bermuda shorts, hoods, and pee valves are complementary solutions that, when paired with the main wetsuit, allow the equipment to be adapted to seasonal conditions, water temperatures, and the spearfisher’s individual preferences.
