Chartplotters and Fishfinders for Navigation

Knowing the bottom and your position while navigating is one of the essential requirements on board any boat. A fishfinder or chartplotter installed at the helm lets you read depth in real time, identify the structure of the seabed, mark points of interest with waypoints, and plan routes accurately, integrating satellite data and nautical cartography in a single instrument.

This category includes Garmin’s navigation range, divided into three lines with different positioning and features: the Striker series, designed as an essential fishfinder with built-in GPS; the Echomap series, which includes both UHD2 and Ultra2 models, true chartplotters with integrated nautical charts; and the new GPSMAP 9000 series, the most advanced reference point for users who require large displays, 4K resolution, and complete integration with onboard systems.

Product Types

Striker Series

The Striker series includes the most accessible Garmin fishfinders in the category, designed for users who need a fishfinder with built-in GPS without the nautical chart features of chartplotters. The series includes three generations: the original Striker, Striker Plus, and Striker Vivid, the latter being the most recent.

Striker Vivid models are available in four display sizes: 4", 5", 7", and 9". The main difference between models is not only screen size, but also the sonar features paired with the transducer. The 4cv, 5cv, and 7cv models use a transducer with traditional CHIRP and ClearVü technology, while the 7sv and 9sv models are paired with a transducer that adds SideVü side-scanning mode. All Striker Vivid models integrate high-sensitivity GPS for waypoint marking, route creation, and boat speed display, as well as the Quickdraw Contours feature for generating custom bathymetric maps with approximately 30-centimeter resolution. The distinctive feature of the Vivid line compared with previous generations is the new palette of seven high-contrast color tones, designed to distinguish different bottom types and submerged structures more clearly.

The Striker and Striker Plus generations, still available on the market, differ mainly in connectivity: Plus models feature Wi-Fi and access to the ActiveCaptain app for software and chart updates, features not found on base Striker models. Every generation of the entire series features a physical-button interface, designed for easy operation even with wet hands or gloves.

Echomap Series

The Echomap series marks the transition from a simple fishfinder to a true chartplotter: unlike Striker models, all Echomap models support nautical cartography with preloaded Garmin Navionics+ maps. The series includes two main lines, Echomap UHD2 and Echomap Ultra2, with different positioning and technical equipment.

The Echomap UHD2 line is available with 5", 6", 7", and 9" displays, all touchscreen with physical-button assistance. The integrated fishfinder module has 500 W of power and supports traditional CHIRP, CHIRP ClearVü, and CHIRP SideVü; when paired with a GT24UHD-TM transducer, it can provide Ultra High-Definition scanning sonar for clearer target identification. The 5" and 7" models support wireless sharing of sonar images, waypoints, and routes with another Echomap UHD2 unit on board, avoiding the need to run additional cables. Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity enables access to the ActiveCaptain app for the OneChart feature, smart notifications, software updates, and Garmin Quickdraw community data. The series includes one year of daily Navionics+ chart update subscription and supports LiveScope real-time scanning sonar.

The Echomap Ultra2 line is positioned at a higher level, with displays available in 10", 12", and, in the most recent versions, up to 16". It features a multiband GNSS receiver (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou) for greater positioning accuracy even under bridges, along cliffs, or in bays with tree cover. It supports the entire LiveScope transducer line as well as ClearVü, SideVü, and traditional CHIRP transducers. The latest models in the Ultra2 line add an HDMI output for screen mirroring on an external display or TV, wireless integration with Force trolling motors for navigation to waypoints and speed control, and voice commands via built-in Bluetooth technology paired with a compatible headset. Like the UHD2 line, Echomap Ultra2 units also share sonar data, waypoints, and routes wirelessly with other compatible units on board.

GPSMAP 9000 Series (New Generation)

The new GPSMAP 9000xsv series expands the Garmin flagship range into intermediate helm display sizes, with touchscreen displays available in three formats: 10", 13", and 17". The 13" and 17" models offer up to 4K resolution with Mini LED backlighting, a technology debuting in the marine field with this series, providing greater brightness and contrast when viewing sonar targets. The 10" model is supplied with a mounting bracket included in the package to simplify onboard installation.

All models in the series integrate traditional xCHIRP sonar combined with UHD scanning mode, delivering detailed returns and improved reading depths compared with previous generations. The RapidReturn feature provides twice the sonar refresh rate compared with previous models, useful both for cruising and racing. Dual-band Wi-Fi connectivity (2.4 and 5 GHz) speeds up chart and software updates via the ActiveCaptain app. Through the 1 Gb Garmin BlueNet network, chartplotters, radar, cameras, and transducers can be integrated into a single system, while the OneHelm feature allows all onboard operations to be managed from a single display, also integrating Garmin EmpirBus onboard automation systems and third-party automation solutions. From a construction standpoint, the series features an edge-to-edge glass profile, designed for both recessed and flush helm installation.

Handheld Sounding Device

The Plastimo Echotest II handheld sounding device is a waterproof instrument for manual depth measurement down to 80 meters. Unlike electronic fishfinders, it requires no power supply or installation: it is a mechanical instrument to keep on board as safety equipment or for use in situations where electronics are not available.

How to Choose Between Striker, Echomap, and GPSMAP 9000

The main difference between the three lines concerns the presence of integrated nautical cartography and the level of integration with the rest of the onboard instrumentation. Striker units are pure fishfinders: they read the bottom, mark waypoints, and build custom bathymetric maps with Quickdraw Contours, but they do not support commercial nautical charts. They are suitable for users who usually navigate familiar areas, on small boats or kayaks, and are looking for an instrument that is simple to install and use.

The Echomap series adds preloaded Navionics+ cartography and is organized into two levels: the UHD2 line, more compact and accessible, suited to smaller boats where 5" to 9" displays are sufficient; and the Ultra2 line, which offers larger displays, multiband GNSS for more precise positioning, HDMI output, integration with Force trolling motors, and voice commands, making it more suitable for larger boats or for users who want a more integrated onboard system.

The GPSMAP 9000 series is intended for users who need large displays (10" and above) with the highest available resolution, complete onboard system integration via the BlueNet network and OneHelm feature, and higher-level sonar with RapidReturn technology. It is the right choice for complex helms where multiple instruments (radar, cameras, automation systems) require centralized control.

Some practical criteria to guide your choice:

  • Need for nautical cartography: if navigation with updated charts is required, the choice should be Echomap or GPSMAP 9000. If a self-generated bathymetric map of your fishing or navigation areas is sufficient, a Striker is enough.
  • Boat size and type: for small boats or kayaks, Striker units or 5"-7" Echomap UHD2 models are better suited in terms of size. For medium and large boats, Echomap Ultra2 models or the GPSMAP 9000 series offer larger displays and greater integration.
  • Onboard integration: users who need to connect radar, cameras, audio systems, or automation systems will find the GPSMAP 9000 series the most complete platform, thanks to the BlueNet network and OneHelm feature. Echomap Ultra2 models offer an intermediate level of integration with support for Force motors and HDMI output.
  • Required sonar type: SideVü side-scanning is available on Striker Vivid 7sv and 9sv and across the entire Echomap series; higher-resolution UHD scanning is a distinctive feature of Echomap UHD2, Echomap Ultra2, and GPSMAP 9000.
  • Budget: the Striker series is positioned in the most accessible price range, Echomap UHD2 in the mid-range, Echomap Ultra2 in a higher range, while the GPSMAP 9000 series represents the highest investment, consistent with its flagship product features.

Sonar and Navigation Technologies: Technical Features

The products in this category use Garmin sonar and connectivity technologies that are useful to understand in order to interpret product specifications correctly.

CHIRP (Compressed High-Intensity Radiated Pulse): unlike traditional single-frequency sonar, CHIRP sends a pulse that continuously covers a range of frequencies, from lower to higher. The device processes the echo from each frequency separately, achieving greater target separation and sharper images. It is the core sonar technology found across all three lines in the category.

ClearVü: down-scanning sonar that produces high-definition images of what is directly beneath the boat. Available in standard version on Striker models and in UHD version on Echomap lines and the GPSMAP 9000 series, with higher image resolution.

SideVü: side-scanning sonar that expands coverage on both sides of the boat. Found on Striker Vivid 7sv and 9sv and across the entire Echomap range, in UHD version on the latter.

xCHIRP and UHD scanning (GPSMAP 9000): the new GPSMAP 9000xsv series combines traditional xCHIRP sonar with an advanced UHD scanning mode, supported by the RapidReturn feature, which doubles the sonar refresh rate compared with previous generations.

LiveScope: real-time scanning sonar technology. It is compatible with Striker Vivid 7sv and 9sv and with the entire Echomap range (UHD2 and Ultra2). It requires separate purchase of the Panoptix LiveScope transducer.

Quickdraw Contours: feature available across the entire Striker series and on Echomap. It automatically generates custom bathymetric maps of the bottom with approximately 30 cm resolution while the boat is moving, saving data to the internal memory and allowing it to be shared with the Garmin Quickdraw community via Wi-Fi.

Multiband GNSS: the satellite receiver in Echomap Ultra2 supports GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou, ensuring more precise position determination than single-band GPS receivers, especially in poor satellite coverage conditions.

Wireless and network connectivity: Striker Plus and Vivid, Echomap UHD2 and Ultra2, and the GPSMAP 9000 series feature Wi-Fi for access to the ActiveCaptain app. The GPSMAP 9000 series adds dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz) and the 1 Gb Garmin BlueNet network for integrating chartplotters, radar, cameras, and transducers into a single system, managed through the OneHelm feature.

Practical Use

While navigating, traditional CHIRP sonar provides real-time depth and a representation of the bottom, essential information for route safety and for avoiding areas with hazardous shallows. ClearVü adds downward visual detail, useful for identifying bottom composition and the presence of submerged structures. SideVü extends the reading laterally, making it possible to detect structures away from the boat’s centerline.

Waypoint marking allows you to save the exact coordinates of points of interest, moorings, harbor entrances, or areas to avoid, so you can find them again on later outings with meter-level accuracy. Across all three lines, the integrated GPS or GNSS calculates the boat’s position and speed, displaying them on the screen together with sonar information.

The Quickdraw Contours feature, available on Striker and Echomap, progressively builds a custom bathymetric chart of the bottom you frequent, generated automatically while navigating and saved on the device without the need for external subscriptions.

Echomap Ultra2 chartplotters and the GPSMAP 9000 series, thanks to compatibility with Navionics charts and network connectivity, integrate into a broader navigation system, sharing data with other onboard instruments such as autopilots, radar, or additional displays. The OneHelm feature of the GPSMAP 9000 series extends this integration to onboard automation systems as well, allowing lights, pumps, and other systems to be managed from the same screen used for navigation.

Protective covers compatible with the respective instrument series are used on board when the device is not in operation, protecting the display from salt spray, UV rays, and abrasions typical of the marine environment.
