Socks for Spearfishing

Socks are an essential part of spearfishing equipment. Their main function is to protect the foot from cold and abrasions, while also improving power transfer to the foot pocket and fin during the fin kick. A poorly chosen sock—because of its thickness, finish, or cut—can compromise swimming propulsion transfer, cause pressure points on the foot, or reduce thermal efficiency during longer sessions in the water.

In this section, Deep Blue brings together a wide selection from seven specialized brands, with thicknesses ranging from 1.5 mm to 5.0 mm and technical finishes ranging from smooth exterior neoprene to smooth skin surfaces, as well as holographic textures, camouflage colors, and technical fabrics. The range covers the needs of those who fish in warm, Mediterranean, or cold waters.

Materials and Technical Features

The base material of almost all the socks in this category is neoprene, a closed-cell synthetic elastomer that traps a layer of water between the fabric and the skin. This layer is quickly warmed by body temperature and acts as thermal insulation. Below are the different types of materials used for socks.

Double-lined neoprene socks. Double-lined neoprene has a fabric lining on both sides, inside and outside. This construction makes them easier to put on whether the foot is dry or wet, reduces friction with the fin foot pocket, and gives the sock good mechanical durability.

Smooth exterior / lined interior neoprene socks. The smooth neoprene outer surface offers fast drying and maximum insulation, while the internal fabric lining ensures comfort against the skin and makes the sock easier to put on when the foot is dry.

Exterior-lined / open-cell interior neoprene socks. In this configuration, the outer side is covered with a fabric that protects the neoprene from mechanical wear and prolonged exposure to external elements, while the inner side is open-cell neoprene—the so-called split neoprene—which, in contact with the skin, offers a very soft feel and excellent grip.

Socks with holographic or camouflage texture. Many models feature surface finishes with a holographic effect or marine camouflage colors. In these cases, the aesthetic function is combined with a technical neoprene structure, with variants designed to meet fishing conditions on different types of rocky seabeds.

Dyneema socks. The C4 DYN Socks are made with Dyneema fiber. Dyneema is a high-strength, low-stretch material that gives the sock greater mechanical abrasion resistance than traditional neoprene, while maintaining a reduced thickness. They do not provide thermal insulation and are therefore suitable only for warm waters.

The soles on many models are treated with anti-slip material, often extending up to the heel area to ensure stability inside the foot pocket and improve grip during the push phase, as well as to protect the sole of the socks when worn for walking.

How to Choose Socks for Spearfishing

Choosing the right sock depends on two main variables: water temperature and compatibility with the fin foot pocket size.

Water temperature. For waters above 24°C, thin 1.5–2.0 mm socks offer minimal mechanical protection with almost no thermal insulation. For the Mediterranean during milder periods (18–24°C), thicknesses from 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm are generally used. For waters below 17°C, or for extended sessions in cold water, 4.0 to 5.5 mm socks provide more suitable thermal insulation thanks to the thicker neoprene layer, allowing longer stays in the water.

Foot pocket compatibility. The sock thickness must be compatible with the fin foot pocket. A foot pocket sized for barefoot use becomes too tight with a 3 mm sock, and in turn a foot pocket sized for a 3 mm sock becomes too tight with a 5 mm sock.

Available Brands

The selection of socks in this category includes products from seven brands specialized in spearfishing equipment.

Omer is represented by the 140 Comfort models (available in 3 and 5 mm), Spider, and Holo Stone. The 140-degree cut is a distinctive technical feature of the line, shared across the brand’s different models with variations in surface finish.

Mares offers the most extensive range in terms of thicknesses, with the Flex Ultrastretch, Illusion, Illusion Brown, Smooth Skin, and Black 50/60 Socks. The latter model is available in 5 mm and 5.5 mm versions, making it the thickest sock in the category.

Cressi is represented by the Anti-Slip Socks, Camou Tracina, Sarago, and Sarago Camo Brown. The camouflage models stand out for the coloring applied to the neoprene, with patterns inspired by Mediterranean seabeds.

Beuchat offers the Marlin, Rocksea, and Sirocco Sport line, available in Black and Rocksea color variants. The range covers intermediate thicknesses suitable for use in the Mediterranean.

Salvimar is represented by four models: New Skinwind, Fit Pro, and Tactile. The Tactile Socks with heat-welded watertight seams are available in a large number of variants—up to 15—and combine size and thickness options, offering great flexibility of choice.

C4 offers the Zero socks and the DYN Socks in Dyneema. The C4 line is aimed at those looking for technical socks with specific construction features.

Sigal Sub is represented by the Hydra Socks model in 2 mm thickness, available in five size variants.

Conclusion

Spearfishing socks are not all the same. The differences between the various models in this category involve concrete technical features: neoprene thickness, outer finish, anatomical cut, anti-slip sole, assembly method, and materials used. The right choice depends on the water temperature where you fish and the size of the foot pocket you use.

Deep Blue offers a selection of spearfishing socks covering the full range of uses, from thin 1.5 mm models for tropical waters to 5.5 mm winter socks, with products from brands such as Omer, Mares, Cressi, Beuchat, Salvimar, C4, and Sigal Sub. All models are available in multiple sizes, with thickness options selectable directly from the product page.
